Sonocur
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy
Every once in a while an interesting new concept presents itself. When I first heard from Dr. Brian Day about this orthopedic low frequency shock wave treatment, I must admit that I was a bit skeptical. But then most of the bone tendon pain syndromes that are best treated with low frequency ultrasound were those that we did not treat effectively with conventional therapy. So, what did we have to lose?
The discovery of pain relief was serendipitous. The technology developed in the 80s from the experience of the urologists who treated kidney stones with the lithotriper. They noticed that pain was reduced when the intensity was decreased. This may be explained by the hyperstimulation of the tissue producing analgesia.
The current device underwent clinical trials in Germany in the 90s. Dr. Day has been using this in Vancouver for the past year with very satisfying results.
Results: 75% of the patients who are treated with 3 sessions of 10 minutes have relief of their pain. 75% of those patients are still improved at 1 year. No patients are made worse.
Some of the conditions that are treated extracorporeal shock wave treatment are:
The sonocur machine used to treat chronic patellar tendinitis.
The treatment of medial epicondylitis - golfers elbow.
The treatment of lateral epicondylitis - tennis elbow.
